1976, the hottest summer for a generation and life was perfect for the two young brothers Philip and Roger. They lived an idyllic life on a farm in the picturesque dales of the north of England. With their days spent on the farm, playing on Tarzan swings, building dens and swimming outdoors, their perfect existence was plunged into darkness when tragedy struck the family. Within a ten week period, the boys lost their parents and were left as orphans. This is the story of Philip and his brother Roger, how their grandparents stepped in to bring them up and how a family and community came together to deal with the consequences that the devastation of death had left behind. Orphan Boys is not a misery memoir, it's a story full of love, strength and hope. This book is an uplifting tale of a family's survival and how they faced the huge challenges that life threw at them.

Lucky enough to love two of the three Mews brothers, I couldn't wait to read this first book from Phil. Much of the story of these 'Orphan Boys' I knew, but the detail and tales of mischief have filled me with knowing giggles the last couple of days as I've devoured every page. I could almost smell the sunshine of that endless Summer of '76 on my skin as the story unfolded, so wonderful and descriptive is Phil's reminiscing. But I've also wiped away many tears at the utter heartbreak of finding out the more intimate memories of how these amazing boys were brought up. Truly a delightful, evocative read, and one that has left me missing 'our Roger' terribly, but so, so proud of my dear friend Philip. The best love letter to a family ever written.I know there are other books from Phil in the pipeline and can't wait to read them as, if they are anything like this, Phil Mews is going to be an extremely successful author.
Regardless of whether or not you know the Mews family and the story of these amazing boys, if you just love a good book that can have you quickly laughing out loud and occasionally reaching for a tissue, this is well worth a read. Definitely 5 stars.

Orphan Boys Phil Mews 9781521313732 Books Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book-I t's a sad story but uplifting too. It's packed full of 1970's nostalgia that is bound to strike a chord with anyone who grew up in the British countryside in that era.
A very touching recount of a childhood tragically and repeatedly affected by loss. The vivid descriptions bring back forgotten memories of a 70's childhood and familiar local places. The love remembered and the positivity and resilience of the boys is awe inspiring.
Thank you for sharing it Phil. A reminder that we shouldn't take loved ones for granted.
Thoroughly enjoyed Orphan boys from the first page to the last!
Moving, heartfelt, beautifully written memoir that brings to life a childhood faced with grievous loss and family tragedy. Orphan Boys succeeds in both honoring fragile memories and celebrating the close bonds of siblings and community. Wonderful book!
This is a fantastic read for anybody, but I would especially recommend it for anyone who has left the Dales. Reading this book brought back so many memories of living in Stanhope. At times I could practically taste, smell, hear and feel my hometown village. Phil's recollection of details is truly amazing and I found myself transported back to times I had forgotten about. This is definitely a book I will read time and time again.
